My Rights - My Voice

The context of the project

Many persons with disabilities throughout Europe receive support by a service providing organisation. The quality of the provided service depends mostly on the quality of the staff of the service providers. Staff is more or less educated and trained, depending on the educational system in every European country. The curricula of the educational institutions differ quite a lot. All of them have in common that they do not involve persons with disabilities in the training and education of staff in a systematic way, on a regular basis. Within this context, My Rights, My Voice Project has been developed under the Lifelong Learning Programme, sub-programme Grundtvig with the main goal to improve adult education by transferring an innovative approach of international training people with disabilities in Europe.

The objectives of the project

The project objecitves were to train persons with learning disabilities to become trainers on their rights as they are described in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) which is the reference document for the disability sector worldwide. These trained trainers with learning disabilities are planned to get involved in training of staff of service providers for persons with disabilities. Educational institutions which provide this staff training are supposed to employ or subcontract trainers with learning disabilities on a regular basis. Staff being trained by persons with disabilities who could be the clients they support gets a better understanding of the rights and the needs of persons with disabilities, they provide better services which leads to a better quality of life for persons with disabilities.
